A Private Year-Round Day Program for Children on the Autism Spectrum

HISTORY

The Manor House School of Cape Cod is a private, non-profit special education day school located in South Dennis, Massachusetts.

MHSCC was conceived by the parents of Joseph Bober, a remarkable 7-year-old boy with Autism, to provide educational services of an exceptionally high standard to children aged 3 to 11 who are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum.

When Joseph was diagnosed with Autism, the Bobers struggled with questions that initially had no answers. After four years, the puzzle is finally coming together

  • Autism is complex, ambiguous, and different in every child’s case.
  • Research breeds both revelation and reconciliation
  • Autism often exists in partnership with other neurological and metabolic disorders.
  • Families touched by Autism typically feel isolated within their neighborhood communities.
  • Raising a child with Autism requires a community effort.
  • Successes shared between families with Autism and the larger community are multiplied exponentially.
  • Autistic children can learn communication skills that are indistinguishable from their well peers.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY

B. F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior (1957) provides the framework of MHSCC programming methodology, which is based on the premise that communication must be functional in order to provide the foundation for the development of the skill necessary to participate in typical school, family and community settings.

MISSION

Dr. and Mrs. Bober founded MHSCCC to provide the Cape and Islands’ younger Autistic community with the learning challenge and clinical support needed to meet the educational and social demands of their home schools.

MHSCC proposes that by learning the skills necessary to acquire academic and social success, Autistic children will realize their native learning potential, achieve independence within their neighborhood school, and become productive members of their broader community network.
