Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis & Teaching Verbal Behavior in the Classroom
Featuring Tom Caffrey, M.Ed., BCBA, founder of the Verbal Behavior Network & VBN Training

This January 2009 event, sponsored by The Manor House School of Cape Cod and held at The 1867 West Dennis Graded School House, featured an all day, free introduction to ABA/Verbal Behavior methodologies emphasizing through extensive use of videotaped case studies that intensive ABA programs featuring Verbal Behavior methodologies:
  • enhance the learning experience of students with autism in public school settings;
  • encourage faster and more effective inclusion of such students;
  • ultimately mainstream such students into a general education environment with little or no distinction between them and their typically developing peers.

While certainly open to parents of children with autism and other interested parties, this event was targeted to public school special educators to both educate and survey public school staff as to MHSCC’s presence and purpose in the community. Of the sixty-two attendees, almost fifty represented a total of nineteen public schools within eight school districts. As indicated by evaluations solicited at the conclusion of the event, the overwhelming response to the event was that of extremely high regard, whether reported by parent or professional.

Most importantly, this event underscored MHSCC’s service mission, to train students with autism intensively in the acquisition of functional language skills and return them to public school swiftly, appropriately and efficiently.

"Behavior Analysis in general, and Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior in particular, … provides professionals and parents with a solid methodology for language assessment and intervention that has the backing of decades of empirical research."
Mark L. Sundberg, Ph.D., BCBA
